What is it?

Homelessness

Homelessness: The American Psychological Association defines homelessness as lacking safe, stable, or adequate housing whether they are sheltered or unsheltered (Barry, et. Al. 2009). This is the definition I will be using throughout this site.

Housing Insecurity/Instability

Housing Insecurity/Instability is characterized by the inability to maintain adequate housing while also having secure finances. This includes but is not limited to trouble paying rent or spending majority of one's income on rent, overcrowding, and no long term residence (Healthy People 2030)

Point In Time Count

The Point In Time Count or PIT Count is the most important part of research into homelessness. The basic idea of the PIT count is that organizations that provide resources to homeless people must do a count of the amount of homeless people in their care once a year. This method is considered to be the best but it still has many limitations: 1. the PIT count can never get the full picture of homelessness, 2. the PIT count and very little other forms of research can give us long term information on homelessness, and 3. COVID-19 has limited the amount the PIT count can reach.

COVID-19 limited the ability for research to perform first hand research because of CDC guidelines. These limitations lowered the amount of data found in the PIT count reports.
